Transforming Timber Trails into Climate Solutions: The Story of Muara Teweh Conservation

Jakarta, 29 October 2025 — Deep in the heart of Central Kalimantan, lies one of Indonesia’s largest active logging concessions, spanning more than 250,000 hectares, an area twice the size of New York City. For over 30 years, these forests have been the backbone of the local economy, fueling timber production and livelihoods. But beneath this long-standing economic engine lies a new opportunity, a chance to reimagine how forest resources can sustain both people and the planet. After decades of responsible forestry management, the concession is now evolving toward a future where nature, communities, and business growth align.

From Logging Legacy to Lasting Impact

For over three decades, Muara Teweh’s forests have supported local livelihoods and regional development. Today, the project’s owners are taking a bold step forward, aiming for transition from traditional timber operations toward a nature-based climate solution that ensures long-term forest health and community well-being.

Through this transition, the Muara Teweh Conservation (MTC) project represents a model for how working landscapes can play a vital role in Indonesia’s Net Zero ambitions. By conserving high-carbon forests and restoring degraded lands, MTC aims to balance production and preservation, turning the same land that once supplied timber into a source of enduring environmental value and local empowerment.

But a new vision is taking root. The Muara Teweh Conservation (MTC) project, aims to turn these once-threatened logging areas into a large-scale nature-based carbon project, protecting forests, restoring degraded land, and building pathways toward net zero emissions.

Reviving the Forests, Restoring Hope

Through the Improved Forest Management (IFM) and Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) approaches, the MTC project is designed to halt logging and regenerate degraded zones. Across 202,000 hectares, the project will implement forest management and restoration activities that could prevent and remove over 27 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) over 40 years, roughly 696,000 tonnes per year.

This means fewer emissions entering the atmosphere and more carbon being captured naturally by the forest, a significant contribution to Indonesia’s net zero journey.

The project will safeguard 35 flora and 27 fauna species, including critically endangered species like the Helmeted Hornbill, Sunda Pangolin, and Bornean Ironwood. Protecting these ecosystems does more than conserve wildlife; it preserves the cultural and ecological heritage of the indigenous Dayak communities who have lived in harmony with nature for generations.

Empowering Communities, Building Resilience

Beyond the carbon and conservation impact, MTC places people at the center of climate action. The project works hand-in-hand with local Dayak communities, addressing their most pressing needs from improved water systems to sustainable agriculture and alternative livelihoods that reduce dependence on logging.

By combining forest protection with community empowerment, MTC shows that climate action and economic growth can thrive together.

Financing the Path to Zero Emission

To realize this transformation the project requires USD 20-25 million in financing, covering community development, reforestation, and long-term monitoring. Investors and buyers who participate aren’t just funding a carbon project; they are backing a legacy, one that turns a logging concession into a living, breathing carbon offset powerhouse, generating high-integrity carbon credits verified under Verra’s VCS program (VCS #4520).

These credits will contribute to real, measurable carbon trading opportunities that help companies and nations move closer to carbon neutral and net zero targets.

Join the Journey

The Muara Teweh Conservation project embodies the power of transformation, from extraction to restoration, from emissions to zero emission potential.
