Mulyanto's journey with Fairatmos began two years ago, just after he completed his university studies. He was immediately immersed in projects, tasked with land cover sampling and mapping for drone operations, which was a rewarding but challenging role for a newcomer. Fortunately, he was directly equipped by Fairatmos to get his own drone pilot certification by joining a drone training program with TerraDrone.

He credits his rapid development to the structured support and collaborative atmosphere at Fairatmos. The team's "divide and conquer" approach and daily check-ins allowed him to take on new tasks and build confidence. This mentorship was crucial, helping him bridge the gap between academic theory and practical execution. He notes that while his academic background was helpful, the true learning happened on the job, where he saw how theoretical calculations like Above Ground Biomass (AGB) translated into quantifiable carbon credits and financial value.

A Major Turning Point: From Analyst to Field Leader

A significant milestone in Mulyanto's career was his involvement in a project in Kalimantan, where he was tasked with leading the team for a total area of 11.000 hectares. This project was his first major turning point, moving him from a technical analyst to a decision-maker on the ground. He was responsible for a massive data acquisition task, capturing data from a significant portion of the total project area. The forest area in Kalimantan consists of Stable Forest, Peatland, and Mangrove ecosystem. This project also allowed him to work on new analyses, such as Drainability Elevation Limits (DEL), which helps predict which peatlands are at risk of drying out.

Beyond the data, Mulyanto faced unique logistical challenges. In a separate field project, he encountered a lack of stable internet and electricity. His team had to travel for hours just to charge their equipment and transfer data. One particularly harrowing experience involved two local team members getting lost, leading Mulyanto to step up and coordinate with local village officials to ensure their safety. This experience taught him the importance of leadership, communication, and adaptability in high-pressure situations. He noted that in the field, even with advanced technology, it is essential to be prepared for the unexpected, from challenging terrain to unexpected cultural protocols.

He explained that while satellite images can show a forested area, being in the field allows him to see the actual landscape and identify issues like illegal logging or deforestation. He believes he has gained a better understanding of how a forested area appears in real life versus how it's represented by colors and shapes on a satellite image.
