Fairatmos at ASEAN Blue Carbon Launch: Accelerating Nature-Based Climate Finance in Southeast Asia
News

Jakarta, May 21, 2025 — Fairatmos is honored to be invited to the official launch of the ASEAN Blue Carbon and Finance Profiling (ABCF) Project, held at Tribrata Darmawangsa, Jakarta. The project is supported by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNDP under the ASEAN Coordinating Task Force on Blue Economy. This initiative underscores the strategic importance of blue carbon ecosystems in tackling climate change and driving sustainable economic growth across Southeast Asia.
What Is Blue Carbon and Why It Matters
Blue carbon ecosystems—such as seagrass beds, mangroves, and peatlands—are among the world’s most powerful natural carbon sinks. For instance, seagrasses can sequester carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests, while peatlands can store twice as much carbon as all forests globally combined. ASEAN is home to:
-
33% of global seagrass beds, and
-
~40% of tropical peatlands, representing ~6% of global peat resources.
Despite their enormous potential, these ecosystems remain underutilized due to limited technical expertise, lack of financing, and gaps in policy integration.
Launch Event Highlights
The event opened with keynote speeches from:
-
H.E. Satvinder Singh, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN,
