A New Chapter for Carbon Market in Indonesia at COP30: Fairatmos and South Pole Sign Landmark Offtake LOI
News

Bélem, 17 November 2025
At the Indonesia Pavilion during COP30 in Belém, at the Seller Meet Buyer session on 17 November 2025, Fairatmos and South Pole signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a carbon credit offtake from the Muara Teweh Conservation (MTC) Project. It is a large scale Improved Forest Management and Restoration project, currently under development, aims to showcase carbon finance as a sustainable source of revenue for Nature-based Solutions projects.
The session was opened with a presentation by Natalia Rialucky, CEO and Founder of Fairatmos, who introduced the MTC project, a 250,000+-hectare area in Central Kalimantan that is transitioning from an active logging activity toward an Improved Forest Management and Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation carbon program. Once developed, the MTC project is estimated to reduce over 27 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) throughout its crediting period, whilst protecting and restoring degraded forest. “A large-scale project like Muara Teweh is critical for delivering climate impact, empowering local communities, and preserving biodiversity," said Natalia Rialucky. "By transitioning from active logging to forest conservation, it showcases a viable and sustainable new business model for the land-use sector. This LOI with South Pole is a powerful signal that there is robust buyer demand for high-integrity projects, building essential confidence for further investment in Indonesia's sustainable land-use sector."
Following the presentation, Fairatmos and South Pole formalized their intent to support the project through an offtake Letter of Intent (LoI) signing, symbolizing a shared dedication to advancing transparent, high-quality carbon projects in the region. South Pole as global climate solutions providers intend to purchase emission reduction units from the project in order to channel international carbon finance and accelerate climate impact .
Lucila Serra, Regional Associate Director, Policy & Strategy of South Pole, emphasized their shared vision, stating: “South Pole is proud to partner with Fairatmos in supporting nature-based solutions in Indonesia. As environmental policies strengthen worldwide, we are encouraged to see the growing recognition of NBS as essential, cost-effective tools for meeting — and raising — global climate ambition under the Paris Agreement. High-integrity carbon markets remain vital to scaling the investment needed to deliver real climate impact on the ground”. 'Our commitment to high-integrity carbon projects perfectly aligns with the Muara Teweh Conservation Project’s vision. This partnership with Fairatmos is a significant step in securing a robust supply of verified emission reduction units from a project that delivers exceptional co-benefits for biodiversity and local indigenous communities in Central Kalimantan. We look forward to advancing transparent, high-quality nature-based solutions together.'" -> {South Pole team to edit}
“This Offtake LOI is very important to showcase that demand for high quality and high integrity carbon projects exists and brings confidence to the market that Indonesia is open for carbon market”, says Natalia. The ceremony highlighted Fairatmos’ vision as a Landscape restoration and Blue Carbon projects to scale nature-based climate solutions and build trust in Southeast Asia’s voluntary carbon market by combining robust science, technology-driven transparency, and inclusive community engagement.
As COP30 brings together global climate leaders in Belém, the collaboration between Fairatmos and South Pole stands as a testament to the growing momentum for cross-border partnerships that prioritize both environmental and social integrity.
About the Muara Teweh Conservation Project
Located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Muara Teweh Conservation Project is a large-scale Improved Forest Management and restoration effort developed by Fairatmos. The project aims to halt logging operations, restore degraded areas, and generate verified carbon credits under Verra (VCS 4520). The project is now in its Project Design Document (PDD) development stage, inviting partners to join its mission to restore one of Indonesia’s most critical forest landscapes.
Estimated impact throughout the project crediting period:
● The MTC project is estimated to reduce over 27 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) throughout its crediting period.
● The project is estimated to protect over 170,000 hectares of forest and restore approximately 30,000 hectares of degraded forest, benefiting more than 34,000 community members, most of whom are indigenous Dayak communities and, while also while safeguarding critically endangered species such as the Helmeted Hornbill, Bornean River Turtle, and Sunda Pangolin.
